Roman Shades

Roman shades have been a popular window covering for centuries. As the name suggests, they were used in ancient Rome. This is because they are classic and versatile. Blind Master Co. has been helping local consumers like you choose the perfect Roman shades since 2017, and we would love for you to be our next happy customer.

Timeless Quality

Unlike some other popular window treatments, Roman shades will not date your home. They can be used in both formal and casual rooms by selecting the appropriate fabric and color. You can ultimately keep your shades for as many years as you maintain your current decor.

Perfect for Small Spaces

Often drapes and other window treatments that open vertically can make a small space look smaller. It can also cause your window or room to be on the smaller side this can look bulky. Our Roman shades fit perfectly into windows of any size, including windows that are not a standard shape. Then they fold away neatly to create an airy ambiance and can make your interior appear more spacious. This is because our shades fold or stack into the headrail instead of alongside your windows.

Choosing a Style

While flat and hobbled are the most popular styles, you can also opt for classic or relaxed (aka European) styles. The type you decide on can change the entire look and feel of your decor, regardless of color or fabric.

Flat Style

A flat shade uses a single piece of fabric without any dowels. The fabric folds and unfolds over itself as you adjust the height of the shade. A flat shade design may be right for you if:

  • You want a clean, minimalist look.

  • Your fabric has a large pattern. The lack of dowels in a flat shade will leave patterns uninterrupted.

  • You want a slimmer profile for shallow windows or French doors.

Hobbled Style

The hobbled style is the most traditional, and what people often picture when thinking of Roman shades. This design features loops of fabric throughout the length of the shade and mimics the drama of drapery without the stack back. The additional fabric for these loops makes a hobbled shade a bit more room darkening and requires more mounting depth.

Features of Hobbled Shades

  • This style maintains a full, folded appearance even when lowered, making it a popular choice for more formal rooms.

  • The folds stay neat and even when the shade is raised.

  • When fully raised, this style crowns your window like a valance.

European Style

The edges of European-style shades curve upwards into a U shape when raised, creating a soft, romantic look. The design is particularly stunning when used with luxury fabrics such as velvet or faux silk.

Classic Fold

This is a popular look when using solid fabric colors. Horizontal seams add stability to the shade and add visual interest. The seams also help the shade to “dress” itself when being raised. This style looks notably attractive on the long, narrow frame of a door.

What Rooms are Best for Roman Shades?

The short answer: all of them. The beauty of these shades is their ability to complement the decor of any room. They can provide a cozy, intimate feel in living rooms and bedrooms, and a crisp, professional look in an office or conference room.

The caveat to Roman shades for every room is kitchens and bathrooms. You will want to dress bathroom windows in a fabric that stands up well to humidity. Cotton and linen are two great options, and a fabric with a bold print will conceal moisture damage should it occur. Shades in the kitchen will absorb grease and cooking odors and will need frequent cleaning. Cotton, linen, and cotton blends take center stage in this room, as well, due to the ease of maintaining them.

Fabric and Lining Options

The fabric you choose has a significant impact on the overall look of the shade. Light and medium-weight fabrics such as cotton and linen blends will give you sharp, crisp folds. Heavier fabrics like velvet and wool will deliver larger, more relaxed folds.

Adding a liner is optional but recommended. They help add structure and shape to your shade and serve as a barrier against UV rays. You want your windows to look just as attractive from the outside as they do from in the room itself. Fading caused by UV damage can leave the back of your shade looking patchy and dull. Blackout liners are the preferred choice as they reduce the rate of fading and add a layer of insulation.

Design Tips

Contrast is one of the oldest and most effective, design tricks in the book. If you want the shade itself to have contrast, a mixture of fabrics is the way to go. Choose lightweight fabric for the predominant color then add a border in a contrasting shade using a heavier fabric, like velvet. You can use your window treatments to spice up a room where neutral shades dominate. Fabrics in bold colors or patterns will add depth and visual interest to your room without having to overhaul the decor style. In a room that already features bright colors, you can create contrast by using a neutral shade in an interesting texture.
